Writing Your First Blog Post? Stop Brainstorming And Do This Instead

I remember the first time I had decided to have a travel blog website. I brainstormed on the first blog I was going to publish. It took more than a week or even a month to plan that perfect blog. And that’s the reason I am choosing to write about this topic for you. Who are waiting for the right MOMENT or the right BLOG POST to publish as first blog on your site. Gone are the days when we relied on some publishing company to give a break to write for them. Now is the time you get a website and write about the things you love. Let the people be the jury. Now that you have decided to write, let’s talk about writing your first blog post like a pro! It’s just a matter of time you start writing.

How to write your first blog post
How to write your first blog post

Writing the first post, choose the niche you want to write –

Talking about your niche or interest is the easiest. Not everyone can write about anything without working too much over it. Plus, writing about your area of interest will get you more ideas and less stress. It’s easy to write about what you know vs something that needs your time to learn first. You better give your dedication to your passion.

What kind of first posts you can write –

  1. First time experience – Subjects like lifestyle, travel, sports and many more would always have the first time experience. So your first blog could be about your experience. You can write about – When you first travelled or When you finished fashion school, or it could be any hunch.
  2. Introduction post – You can also write an introduction post for your blog, which has a bit about you and your experience.
  3. How-To-Posts Or Why-To-Posts. Anyone can read How-to and Why-to posts. These kinds of posts always do well as many people like to learn. They would love to read what new this blog has to add. Or think about this, there will always be a new generation looking for inspirations. So they would like to read about these tutorials. So don’t think it exists. I am sure you will have a new tip or perspective to add on certain things.
  4. Topics related to you: You can start writing about your life, about the country you live in or about the house’s history in case you live in an ancient one(just joking). But you got the idea.
  5. Introductory blog – It can be a small introductory blog. Things about why you chose what you chose to write. Or Why you think lifestyle, writing, suits you, and here you are talking about it on your first blog post.
  6. Write about the listicle – Listicles helps get traffic. I find it more manageable. Simply, make the main point which is called outlines. Then you can elaborate on those points.

How to decide on your first blog topic –

Because you took so long to decide on a topic and produce a blog about it, it’s not easy. No, don’t think like that.

Firstly make a list of topics you can write about. Secondly, check those topics on the search engines. If you find those keywords used a lot or suits your website niche, then that’s your (the) blog topic.

Or do a bit of research, check on Google, Pinterest or Youtube if someone has written about the topic. Read what the others have written, which may inspire you to write your own piece. You may also search on other search engines what topics are trending in your niche. Like in travel right now, people are indeed looking for the places they can travel to, or if a specific location is safe(Covid) to travel to or not. So writing about the trending topics may get you some attention when you are just starting. But do not stop that later. Keep those informative or helpful tips coming on your website for your regular audience to return.

The dilemma of how long your first blog should be –

Writing in-depth about one niche vs one topic will grab attention on google, be sure to keep the SEO factor in mind. But for the first post, do not worry about the length or SEO. Just write your heart out. It doesn’t matter how long you write. What matters you write that post. Plus, keep that in mind that people don’t have time to read your long story. If it’s short, they might give it a read, which is the best thing for you at the start.

Add images to your post –

Do not forget to add some high quality and relevant to the topic images on your blog. There are plenty of sites offering free stock images. Sites like Unsplash, Canva, Pixabay and Pexel have a massive gallery of great pictures to choose from. Adding images increases the chances of engagement better because visual communication is essential. So adding some videos, gifs, or photos will improve the user experience.

Final edit & SEO optimize –

For the final edits, make sure you check for the grammar mistakes, fonts and highlighting the headlines and the points. You can use Grammarly’s free version to limit grammar mistakes and can also check for plagiarism. I am using a pro version of it and let me tell you, its the best decision I made. And since it’s your first blog, do not worry about SEO Optimization. If you are still worried, read and learn this, but check the search bar on any search engine to publish the first blog. Look for the topics you can relate to the blog topic you thought of. And try to have those keywords through out in your writing; this I learned after writing my blogs for an year. But it’s not that difficult. You can do this now or later in your blogs. But most importantly, don’t stress on it for the first one.

You can always come back –

The nightmares of pressing that publish button can get too intimidating. I know I have been there.  Let me tell you and hope this helps. After publishing, if you need to make some changes, you can always go back and update. This is the convenience of owning a website. You can add new points to the blog. Or remove any if with time it’s not valid. Things change with time. And so do your blogs need some updates with time.

Conclusion –

To write a blog post like a pro is not an overnight thing. But one gets after many trials and errors. Always remember it’s only about getting started.

Learn the craft of writing. I choose light write-ups, just as Beth Reekles in her TED talk on youtube, write what you want to read. And voila, there you have an idea what to write.

Later, to get some more boost to your blogs, you can promote it on your social media and learn about PinterestTailwind, and many other helpful resources.

Now pick up a blank paper, make a list of topics and start writing.
