Back To School Preparations For A Kindergartener Parents And Kids
Back To School Preparations For A Kindergartener Parents And Kids

Parents have to be up for the free adventure every morning, and kids are up for the exciting school day they will have. At least, that’s what we always tell our kids. Since we started school for our son, it’s been a circus every morning. Many people think, what’s the big deal about sending your kid to a kindergarten? Well, kid’s are a handful, no matter their age or grade – but become even more so when you start sending them to school.

I am sharing some ideas that helped my husband, and I overcome all the overwhelmingness before our son started school. And yes, it is a big deal to send a 4-year-old to school because he is always sleepy… Our son attended play school and daycare before starting an actual kindergarten. And he had never got homework before. So now, when he has to do it, it becomes an uphill task for both of us, my son and me. The first day of doing homework was so unpleasant! But we know he will get used to it. We keeping our cool but no kidding, making him practice writing is still not easy.

Parent’s preparation before opening school:

  1. The first thing to keep in mind is to make your kids know about things happening beforehand.
  2. You will feel like you are climbing a mountain when you get the child from the bed to the bathroom. So brace yourself for the impact.
  3. Start with making a list of snacks and
  4. Lunch box planner
  5. Set the uniform or casuals if that’s what they are wearing for school, aside day-wise on sundays. So you don’t have to think about what to make them wear in the morning.
  6. I also plan my breakfast to prepare the ingredients or pre-made items the previous day. So I don’t have to spend mental bandwidth in the morning.

Prepare your kids for school:

  1. Keep talking about the school before they start. Let them know that they have to wake up early and they will have fun in school, what the teacher would like, don’t do this to upset your teacher, eat your lunch on your break time and play gently with other kids etc.
  2. Make their sleep routine – “Early to bed, Early to rise.”
  3. Make sure they have started eating by themselves.
  4. Ask them what they like and want for the lunch box. (ps: give the option yourself and let the kid choose from those)
  5. If you don’t already have a reading routine, start it with a storybook or character of their choice and slowly read some words and letters for them. My son love reading dragon, dinosaur books. So I started reading him more books on those animals. And now he loves his books.
  6. I also revise rhymes, counting and letters when we are playing or in the car, so my son is already in the school-syllabus mode.
  7. Since the Covid, we all should keep our kids in the habit of washing hands. Talk about passing germs, wearing a mask etc.
  8. Buy the backpack, bottle, lunch box, or pencil box of the kid’s choice. So they feel excited about going to school with their favourite things.
  9. Tell your child to come back and tell you everything or anything that happened in school.
  10. Talk to kids and make sure they can explain whatever is going on around them. Bad touch and good touch also if they understand it. If they don’t understand, let them know their private parts can only be seen and touched by their parents. I hope I am making sense here.
  11. My son loves listening to the story before going to sleep. Most of the time, use that as an opportunity to make a new story and educate him about things like gratitude, care, friendship, wisdom and staying away from strangers.

Becoming a new parent brings a lot of lessons to be learnt. We, as parents, are learning every day. Be it about handling our kid or about things learnt in school, teaching daily life skills to our child, and much more.

To make things convenient for moms and dads, I have made a list of things you need for a kindergartner. Tap/click on it to buy or save it for later. This list is to save you time and save you from unnecessary brain storming.
