How to introduce 3 letter words for your kids:

Start with the basics:

Begin by introducing simple 3 letter words such as “cat,” “dog,” “cup,” “sun,” “bat,” etc. These words are easy to pronounce and recognize, making it easier for your child to learn them.

Use flashcards:

Flashcards are an excellent tool for teaching new words to kids. Create flashcards with pictures of objects and words written below them. You can start with a few cards and gradually increase the number as your child learns new words. Have your child read the word out loud and then ask them to spell it.

Practice daily:

Consistency is key when it comes to learning. Set aside some time each day to practice with your child. It can be as little as 10 minutes a day, but the key is to make it a regular part of your routine.

Play games:

Make learning fun by incorporating games and activities into your practice sessions. For example, you can play a memory game where your child has to match the word to the picture, or you can use letter blocks to create words and ask your child to read them. We have alphabet blocks from which we make the 3 letter words turn by turn. Download the worksheet below. specifically made for learning 3 letter words for kids. My son practiced it so many times that he now can read the 3 letter words nicely.

Read together:

Reading 3 letter word books together is an excellent way to expose your child to new words and help them develop their reading skills. Choose books with simple three-letter words and encourage your child to read along with you. This will help your child learn, recognize and pronounce the words.

Recently I have found the app Khan academy kids where they have early readers section. Where they have stories which contain easy sight words and 3 letter words for the kids to read and practice. Watch here: https://youtube.com/shorts/JOsMnBSNChE?feature=share

Finally, remember to be patient and encouraging as your child learns. Learning new words takes time, and every child learns at their own pace. Celebrate their progress and keep practicing regularly, and your child will soon be reading and writing three-letter words with ease.

Phonics before starting with three-letter words

Before introducing three-letter words to your child, ensure they understand primary phonics well. Try starting with simple letter-sound recognition and then practice blending those sounds to form words. I started practising 3 letter words with my son when he could recognize the capital letters and at least knows phonics for some of the letters with easy and known words like DOG, CAT, BAT, and PIG, as the kids already learn these animals while learning the alphabets. D for dog, C for cat etc.

You can do this by introducing a letter at a time and having your child identify the sound it makes. Then, try blending two or three letters to create a word and have your child identify it. This way, your child can gain familiarity with the sounds the letters make.

When I started three-letter word practice with my son, it was not very difficult for him or me to get him on board as he understood the drill once I told him and practised phonics as we read the words.

To make him practice, I made these 3 letter word practice worksheets. These sheets have images of the object and animals for the kids to understand the drill of spellings. Because they can still relate to the animals and the spelling of the pictures the way we call them.

Show the 3 letter word objects at home to the kids.

You need to read with the kids and show them the objects. Show the object at home and with the help of phonics try to say the word break by break. Like B-E-D = BED, P-A-N = PAN , PEN, CAP etc.

Also another great way to help kids learn about letters and objects at home is to have them find items around the house with 3 letter words. You can play this game by giving them a flash card. Or let the kids look for the object.

This is a fun and creative way to help kids learn about letter and object recognition at home!

How to use the worksheet sustainably.

Put the sheets into the transparent file pockets, buy some whiteboard markers and let the kids write on the sheets. These markers are easily wipable and cost-effective practice for homeschooling.

Writing practice with the worksheets

In the worksheet, you can see how kids can fill in the blanks to complete the words. Let the kids practice everyday on it.

You can print these sheets and start practicing right away

I would love to know your experience and suggestions to improve.

Checkout the workbook template so you can customise it as you like for your kids.
