41 Must-Do Activities in Bali, Indonesia

Ubud (things to do)

Explore Ubud’s Art Market

Located in the heart of Ubud, the Ubud Art Market (Pasar Seni Ubud) is a bustling, colorful marketplace. Ubud market offers a treasure trove of unique finds. You will find authentic handcrafted souvenirs like handwoven baskets, wood carvings, silver jewelry, and traditional masks—all made by local artisans.

Haggling is allowed! Vendors start with high prices, but negotiating with a smile can land you a great deal.

Visit the Ubud Palace (Puri Saren Agung)

Explore the Ubud Palace, a historical building complex that offers insights into Balinese royalty and architecture

Nestled in the heart of Ubud, Ubud Palace (Puri Saren Agung) is a cultural and historical gem that offers a glimpse into the royal heritage of Bali. Built in the early 19th century, this beautifully preserved palace is still home to Ubud’s royal family and serves as a center of Balinese arts, dance, and culture.

It’s a marvel at the intricate stone carvings, golden doorways, and traditional pavilions that reflect the artistry of Balinese craftsmen.

Learn about the royal history of Ubud, as this palace was once the official residence of the Sukawati royal family.

Wander through lush courtyards adorned with tropical flowers, lotus ponds, and ornate statues, offering a peaceful escape in the middle of Ubud’s bustling center.

By night, the palace transforms into a stage for mesmerizing cultural performances, including the famous Legong and Barong dances, showcasing Bali’s rich storytelling traditions.

Tip: Entrance to the palace is free during the day, but if you want to experience the Balinese dance performances, tickets range from IDR 100,000–150,000 ($6–$10 USD). Arrive early to get the best seats!

Experience spiritual healing in Tirta Empul Temple

This temple in Ubud, where you can bathe in sacred springs as part of a water purification ritual. Our water purification ceremony was very peaceful. Even though hundreds of people will be around you, focus on your inner peace and cleansing. The whole experience is in this video.

Energy Healing:

While doing research for our Bali Vacation, I wanted to book a session for myself and my husband, but I didn’t find someone who could do this. All the old articles mentioned a few names, but if you check, you won’t find them anymore. Some energy healers are too old to perform or close their businesses. But you may check the same at your hotel concierge, and they may help you with that, or they may have someone in their resort who can perform.

Sessions with energy healers may involve chakra balancing, reiki or sound healing. Local healers (called Balian or dukun) offer spiritual cleansing rituals to balance energy, clear blockages, and invite positivity.

Bali Pulina coffee-making

Bali Pulina is one of the must-visit agro-tourism spots near Ubud, where you can experience traditional Balinese coffee-making in a lush, scenic setting. This plantation is famous for Luwak coffee (Kopi Luwak)—one of the world’s most expensive coffees made from beans that have passed through civets (yes, really!).

What to expect at Bali Pulina:

See the coffee-making process – Watch how beans are roasted and ground using traditional methods. The staff may let you try your hands at grinding or roasting the coffee.

Try a coffee and tea tasting – Enjoy a variety of locally grown coffees and herbal teas amongst the thick forestation. Check the packages you would like and opt for them. We chose the Regular package. There’s also a premium one offering more coffee and tea selections and more tours, including coffee-making process tours. And, of course, there’s a price difference.

Learn about Luwak coffee and plantation tours – Discover how this rare coffee is made and why it’s so unique. Bali Pulina is also a nice place to learn about other plants and fruits grown on the plantation.

Snap stunning views – The plantation offers picture-perfect spots, including a natural pool and nature trails

The Yoga Retreats or Yoga Barn:

Ubud has a few institutes that offer sound healing sessions and private consultations with healers. We experienced the Ancient Sound healing session at the Pyramid of Chi and felt very good after the session.

You can visit someone like Ketut Liyer-inspired healers (from Eat Pray Love) for traditional Balinese readings.

Go White Water Rafting on the Ayung River

The exciting rapids offer both gentle currents and Class II-III rapids, making it ideal for beginners and families while still providing an exciting challenge.

Paddle through dense jungle landscapes, past hidden waterfalls where you can take a refreshing dip with the backdrop of towering cliffs and wildlife adds to the magic.

Along the route, you’ll spot intricately carved stone reliefs showcasing Balinese mythology.

Rafting is a group experience, so expect plenty of laughs as you navigate the twists and turns, occasionally getting splashed or even taking a playful plunge!

Not very far from Tegenungan waterfall, near Sukawati, the Hidden Canyon of Beji Guwang is a lovely off-the-beaten-path adventure

This hidden gem features towering rock formations, deep gorges, and flowing streams, creating a mystical and otherworldly atmosphere.

Be careful as the canyon is a mix of climbing, wading, and swimming, making it a challenging yet rewarding experience.

Due to its tricky nature, it’s great to go with a local guide who can help you navigate safely while sharing fascinating stories about the canyon’s spiritual significance in Balinese culture.

It’s a refreshing break to plunge into these water pools to escape the Bali heat.

Visit the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary:

It is a good place in Ubud and home to hundreds of Macaques. Visitors can walk here, interact with the monkeys, and admire the old stone sculptures. It is both a spiritual and wildlife sanctuary site.

There are many immersive workshops for travellers in Ubud to experience its cultural heritage. Learn traditional Balinese BATIK painting, wood carving or silver jewellery making from skilled artisans in Ubud or Celuk. Dance enthusiasts can take lessons in Balinese dance, mastering intricate hand gestures and expressions. For food lovers, cooking classes teach how to prepare authentic Balinese dishes like Satay Lilit and Lawar, starting with market visits to select fresh ingredients. Check with your hotel, and they can arrange a session like this. Other great options include Casa Luna Cooking School in Ubud and art classes at the ARMA Museum. These workshops are not just activities, they are a chance to connect with Balinese traditions and creativity.

Jimbaran & Uluwatu (things to do)

Feast on grilled seafood at Jimbaran Beach cafes:

I remember when we were staying at Four Seasons Resort at Jimbaran Bay, on the day we checked in I saw lamps dotted on the beach. It felt like some ritual, but when asked by a hotel staff member, he said those were the barbeque on the beach. After a few days, we went there for the beachside dinner and fell in love with the vibes. The restaurants were offering live barbeque on each table, which looked like dotted lamps from afar. Eating at this location was great. Especially if you are with kids. Our son kept playing, and we enjoyed our dinner without any tantrums. This place is great if you want Sunset dining with beach vibes.

Visit Uluwatu Temple for traditional Kecak dance shows

Uluwatu Temple, perched on a dramatic cliff 70 meters above the Indian Ocean, is one of Bali’s most breathtaking sea temples.

The temple, known as Pura Luhur Uluwatu, is a significant spiritual site dedicated to the spirits of the sea. As you approach, you’ll be greeted by traditional Balinese architecture, with intricately carved gateways and statues.

You are supposed to wear a belt and sarong provided at the entrance.

As you walk further inside, you will find other Temple entrances, and The temple’s clifftop location provides stunning panoramic views.

It’s one of the best places to spend the sunset in Bali. If you have time, you can stroll along the cliffside paths, and you can take in the expansive ocean vistas and feel the spiritual aura of this place.

But stay alert for the monkeys over there. They can snatch your glasses, purse or even phone. To get it back, you have to pay a lady who keeps some fruits for the monkey, and then they leave your belongings. Some tourists don’t get those back.

Kecak Dance, Must-Do activities in Bali

Kecak Dance shows

Especially the one at the 5 o’clock slot, get booked quickly because people also like to see the sunset from there. Also, the truth about the Kecak dance is that you may not understand the story of the show. So you better read about it already. It’s an adapted version of the Indian mythology Ramayana. The story of the show was understandable for us because we knew the storyline. The others were confused about what was going on because they didn’t even speak or explain the plot in English. And you end up feeling you wasted your money on the show.

Chill at hidden beaches like Balangan and Padang Padang

Balangan Beach is a surfer’s paradise with golden sands and crystal-clear waters. Framed by rugged cliffs and palm trees, it offers a laid-back vibe perfect for sunbathing or catching waves. The beach’s secluded nature makes it a peaceful escape from the busier spots.

How many days are enough in Bali?

Bali, the charming island of Gods, is a paradise that always promises memorable experiences no matter how long you live here. Whether you have a few days or a couple of weeks, there is something unique and magical waiting around every corner.

But from our experience, I would recommend you stay for at least 5-7 days. These many days are ideal for discovering Bali’s magic.

You can spend your time exploring the island like a Tourist with a full Bali itinerary or just enjoy some adventurous activities like hiking, zip lining, or just relaxing at your peaceful Bali resort.

Prepare your Bali itinerary that includes all the fun areas, that’s mostly all the sides of Bali. Especially Seminyak, Uluwatu, Jimbaran, Nusa dua, Ubud for sure, and northeast. Also, you can add Nusa Penida, another island a few waves away from Bali, for a day trip or can make arrangements to stay there for a few days.

Best time to visit Bali

The best time to visit Bali is during the dry season, April to September when the weather’s perfect for outdoor adventures. Just remember, it’s also peak tourist season!

We visited in late October and early November and still found plenty of crowds. Pro tip: check out the Odalan festival or other local celebrations—catching one at a temple near Four Seasons Resort at Jimbaran Bay was a highlight for us.

If you prefer a quieter, greener Bali, the rainy season offers lush landscapes and a peaceful vibe. Whether you’re a surfer or a serenity seeker, Bali’s seasons are according to your liking.

How to go around Bali

The best thing you can do for yourself is download an APP called GRAB. It’s the UBER for Southeast Asia.

Since we live in Malaysia, we already have this app on our phones. This app helps you find a taxi anywhere in Malaysia, Bali, Vietnam and more countries. Whereas in some places, the taxis arrive pretty quickly, we had to wait for them for about 15-20 mins or more in Bali and Kuala Lumpur.

The moment we arrived at the Bali Denpasar airport, we were able to book a taxi since my husband got his number working on an international roaming network. Rather than looking to save money by going for any car service or refraining from ending up with too pricey taxi service, you must go for GRAB services.

Before arriving in Bali, I contacted a few vacation operators, and they gave me a fixed price for the taxi service. And their whole-day taxi services are also more expensive than what we could have saved. We only went to the places we wanted to see. And the distance and traffic also made up our minds to go for only a few tourist spots a day and save our taxi from giving $60 a day to $20 a day.

Conclusion

Bali becomes more than a destination for those people who have more days to stay here. Bali is not just a place; it’s an experience and adventure that stays in your heart for a long time. From its rich culture to stunning landscapes, every corner of this island invites you to create memories that will last for a lifetime. Are you ready to experience Bali Adventure? The island is waiting. Just start your adventure and enjoy everything you can.
