Places to visit stays and about Penang, Malaysia

History Of Penang

I want to talk about the history of Penang because I was very curious to know about it after checking out some pictures on the net during my research for our vacation itinerary there.

What I saw in the pictures are the mansions and hotels designed in the British colonial style. Most of them resembled the buildings we had seen in the Bahamas that still stand the same as in British times, though the Bahamas is still a British territory Penang is not. I had no idea if the British came to this part of the world as well. Being an Indian

YouTube video of the Bahamas can check out the buildings I am talking about

What I learned was that Penang, which is a Malaysian state at present, was shaped by British colonialism. The pictures and some aerial shots made me realize how developed this city is. At least they have tall buildings, more society or township houses and more activities and entertainment than on Langkawi island in Malaysia.

Georgetown eventually became a main city for trading during the 19th century. The British developed the city to do their business and political affairs with Malacca and Singapore. Georgetown was one of the most prosperous trading ports during British times.

Okay, so my history curiosity is full. Let’s move on to learn more about the city.

The city became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008 and became popular among tourists. People visit Georgetown for the charm its architecture gained from the British colonial times. And the culture is different from other parts of Malaysia, as there are different cultural traditions brought by the people from different countries, who settled here.

Best areas and Places to stay in Penang:

As the history of Georgetown brings tons of tourists because of its amazing architecture, diverse culture and delicious food, I searched for hotels to stay in the city centre of Georgetown. I mainly focused on the places that were near most of the attractions so we could walk and explore to save on a taxi.

At Georgetown, the main area is mostly towards the jetty and away from the bridge that connects Penang Island to its other half. You have countless resorts, hotels and Airbnb’s in Georgetown.

Just remember the city is a high traffic area so the price of these accommodations keeps fluctuating to mostly high. So make the reservation in advance to get a cheaper price.

I had booked Hotel Penaga for our 4-day holiday in Penang.

Firstly because it was in the city centre.

Secondly, it had a different look than other modern-designed hotels.

Hotel Penaga has a retro palace-style touch to its decor and architecture which would bring a different look in my YouTube video as well.

The rooms at Hotel Penaga have four poster beds, a sofa bed and enough space to keep your luggage unless you are there for more than 5 days. And you are a family. The room is spacious with a Balcony and jacuzzi since the hotel doesn’t have a swimming pool, well who cares about that if you have a Jacuzzi in the room? Hmmm, soak well girls.

Some affordable stays I checked for our stay were:

Bayview Hotel Georgetown Penang

Hutton

Blue mention

Hotel Penaga –

Sunway Hotel Georgetown

Airbnb at Little Cabin Seaview Luxury Suites

Airbnb joyous cottage @straits garden georgetown

Best Time to Visit Georgetown, Penang:

Malaysia has 2 wet and dry seasons. Penang is hot from December to March end. After July you may see some rain there but if you want to walk around just aim for the dry months.

We visited in March and it was very hot even on Penang Hill. It is famous for spending chilling days in Penang. Maybe the look of Penang will be different during the rainy season.
